The role, explained

What is a Marketing Controller?

A Marketing Controller is the person who makes marketing activity trustworthy — properly planned, approved, tracked, and reported, so leadership, finance, and customers can rely on it.

Finance has a Financial Controller. Operations has an Operations Manager. Marketing, until recently, has had no equivalent — no single role responsible for making sure marketing activity is governed, accurate, and accountable.

A Marketing Controller fills that gap. They don't run campaigns or write creative — they make sure the systems around marketing (approvals, budgets, AI use, reporting) actually work, and that anyone can trust what marketing says it has done.

Why the role exists

The problems a Marketing Controller solves

No operational visibility

Leaders can't see, in real time, what marketing is doing, spending, or approving.

Ungoverned AI use

AI tools are used without oversight, creating brand, compliance, and quality risk.

Fragmented accountability

Dozens of tools, no single owner for whether marketing activity is actually trustworthy.
